Are painful flare-ups in your ankles interrupting your morning walk? It might be time to sit the walks out and figure out exactly why you’re experiencing ankle pain while walking.

It’s not uncommon to feel sore after a long walk. Especially if you are not used to the exercise. But if you are experiencing ankle pain when walking short distances as well, here are a few reasons that may be behind the pain-

Ankle pain reasons

  1. Overuse- If you’ve been on your feet for long hours or walking longer distances than you’re accustomed to, then you may experience ankle pain when walking. This is due to the overuse of the muscles, tendons and ligaments in the ankle joint.

  2. Flatfoot- Flatfoot is a condition where the arch of the foot does not develop properly, leading to a very low arch or no arch at all. This can lead to ankle pain if not corrected through the use of appropriate footwear.

  3. Injury or disease- Ankle pain while walking may also be caused due to an injury, such as a pulled muscle or a strain. It could also be a symptom of conditions such as arthritis. Check with your doctor to eliminate these possibilities.

Ankle pain relief can be obtained by resting, and following the RICE method of injury treatment. You should also opt for comfortable footwear to ensure that your ankle has the right support while walking. Wearing an ankle brace while exercising can help compress the joint and provide support.

If your ankle pain persists, consult a doctor for further pain relief measures.
